This is an erect shrub that is unarmed and up to 4m tall. It forms dense thickets. The flowers are pink to reddish purple and usually there are two on a short branch. Leaves are deciduous and usually have three leaflets, toothed and dark green. Wet places, moist forests, disturbed sites at low to alpine elevations.
