A shrub that is erect to sprawling to 3m tall. It is armed with large yellowish spines. Leaves are alternate and deciduous and up to 35cm across. The leaves are also maple leaf like shape in appearance. Flowers are small and white. Numerous in compact heads. Grows on moist woods and along streams at low to middle elevations and beyond.
