This shrub is one of the first plants to flower in the spring. Flowers are whitish. Male & female flowers grow on separate plants in long clusters. Dry to moist open woods and open areas like roadsides are its preferred habitat. Leaves are alternate and deciduous being pale green and broad lance shape.
